[Mexico 2019] Rocky Point

Labor Day Weekend

Celebrating Labor Day weekend with ghosts of travels past. Three years ago today I visited Rocky Point for the first time.

My Best Friend and my Best Travel Buddy (boy from Europe) and I rented a car*, booked a condo, and drove the 4 hours from Phoenix to Rocky Point on Friday Night. Highlights included: the Pina Coladas at the bar, the beach and the tan, my braids, and Banditos.

*If you are renting a car to drive into Mexico you will be charged “Mexico Insurance” which is about $30/day. But between 3 people renting a car was still cheaper than taking one of the shuttles from Phoenix.

Where we stayed: We booked a condo at Las Palmas Beachfront Resort, through Airbnb. The A/C chilled us out, the furniture was beautiful and the King bed was luxurious (or maybe we were all just really drunk the whole time….). The top image was the beach view from our balcony. But even though we loved our room we spent most nights at the Swim-up Bar downstairs or the beach.

In the mornings the tide was SO low, we were able to walk out to tide pools and explore the rocky seafloor. Another interesting outcome of the tides being so low in the mornings was all the fish washing up on shore (see image). By noon the water was at the top of the beach… if you were one of the beach goers sitting by the water in the morning you had probably moved your stuff away from the rising water AT LEAST 5 times by then.

Cash is king. We paid almost exclusively in cash for food, drinks, etc. One of the etc. being my beach braids- that I got done for only $20 on the beach the first day there. Best purchase ever. Really. There are so many different vendors selling on the beach including: massages, braids, sunglasses, smoothies, sculptures, jewelry, blanks, and so much more.

Bars Nearby:
Besides staying in the resort, there are two bars within walking distance outside of the resort that I would highly recommend going to. Changos is a large open concept dance club- I didn’t stay out late enough either night to get to the party but my friend who did thought this place was a blast… and then spent all his money.

The second bar is Banditos, I liked them enough that I thought they deserved some love on Yelp: BANDITOS
We went here the second morning for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s (spicy with a good flavor 8.5/10) and a breakfast burrito (the brunch food was okay BUT 10000xs better than the $9 buffet offered at the condo, which was soggy and disappointing). Later that night I went back to Banditos for drinks, they had live music, there were so many people, I made friends but ultimately had to leave the bar because I was drunk and told an embarrassing fake story which drove me to have to find new friends elsewhere. Finally, we visited Banditos a third time on our way out of town for lunch. The Juicy Lucy Burger was one of the BEST burgers I have ever eaten (10/10). And it was so much food even I couldn’t eat it all.  So go there for lunch and be happy and full!
